CHAPTER 9

I wasn’t much of a physical fighter, and to be honest I’d been completely taken by surprise, so I didn’t exactly have the upper hand in this situation. With that said, panic took over me and I swung my right heel up behind me as hard as I could. The goal was to hit my attacker in their family jewels. Once they were on the ground I could get out of dodge and leave here as fast as I could.

That didn’t work though, because although my heel went up fast enough to cause some serious damage, my attacker somehow reacted in time, releasing my arms from his grasp and using his now free hand to stop my foot before it made contact.

The attack had failed, but I had my arms available now and I slapped both my hands on the one covering my mouth, digging my nails in as hard as I possibly could. I screamed into his hand, hoping that someone might overhear the muffled sound.

“Darn it, Sage! Will you relax, it’s me!” the attacker answered through a shrill whisper.

I had already put the next phase of my escape plan into motion however, I threw my left leg up into the air, kicked off the bleacher stand and pushed back as hard as I could. As a result my attacker and I went tumbling backwards onto the ground, his arm still braced around my mouth as we hit the floor. I must have knocked all the wind out of him because he released me and I shot up to my feet, turning around to see the culprit.

“Hunter?!” I hissed in disbelief.

He looked back at me with a tired expression and pushed himself up to a sitting position. “You’re crazier than a snake’s armpit, you know that?”

“I’m not the one sneaking around grabbing women in the dark!” I held out my hand and helped him up to his feet. “What was that about anyway?”

“I was moving around back here when I saw you in the shadows. I wanted to get your attention, but I thought I might spook you. To stop you from shouting I covered your mouth.”

“Oh yeah, great plan. Maybe next time you can bring a big knife too and that will really make me feel at home.”

He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t think you were going to freak out and start acting like some crackhead in a kung fu class!”

I crossed my arms and smirked. “You’re just embarrassed I put you on your butt. I thought guardians were supposed to be big, strong fighters.”

“I was holding back. You’re small, Sage, I don’t want to break you. If you ever want a proper wrestling match then let me know. I’ll pin you faster than you can say blueberry pie.”

I was grateful it was dark, because my cheeks flushed with red then, my entire stomach twisting itself in fiery knots as I imagined rassling with Hunter. Behave Sage, I told myself. “Pfft, anytime.” Was all I could muster for a witty reply.
